Introduction

The Network Filesystem (NFS) protocol provides transparent remote access to shared files across networks. The NFS protocol is designed to be portable across different machines, operating systems, network architectures, and transport protocols. Remote Procedure Call (RPC) is used to implement the NFS protocol.

The NFS protocol was designed to be stateless. To deal with file and record locking, 2 separate protocols are specified, the Network Lock Manager (NLM) Protocol and the Network Status Monitor (NSM) Protocol. NLM provides advisory file and record locking. NSM provides applications with information on the status of network hosts.

Currently, there are 2 versions of the NFS protocol in use, Version 2 (V2) and Version 3 (V3). This paper investigated the Linux server implementations of the NFS V2 protocol using UDP protocol.
